What the 2027 Social Security COLA Could Mean for You

On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. This is the largest increase in Social Security benefits since 2023.

The change will affect approximately 76 million people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). At Elite Health Insurance Solutions, we want to help Branson-area seniors understand what is changing and how it may influence their monthly income and healthcare planning.

Because Medicare premiums can be deducted from Social Security payments, a higher benefit does not always translate to the same increase in take-home income. Reviewing both your benefit update and your senior insurance coverage can help you prepare for healthcare expenses in 2027.

What Will the 3.6% Increase Mean for Beneficiaries?

Social Security payments will rise by 3.6% starting in January 2027. The new adjustment is higher than the 2.8% increase applied in 2026.

The SSA estimates that the average retired worker will receive about $75 more per month, with the average monthly payment moving from $2,095 to $2,170. Over a full year, that amounts to roughly $900 in additional benefits.

SSI recipients will also receive the 3.6% adjustment, with revised payments beginning on December 31, 2026. The purpose of the COLA is to help recipients retain purchasing power as the cost of daily necessities rises.

Still, the actual increase will depend on your current benefit amount. A percentage adjustment produces different dollar amounts for each beneficiary.

How Does the Social Security Administration Set the COLA?

The SSA determines the annual COLA by measuring changes in the cost of common goods and services, including food, transportation, and housing. Its calculation relies on an inflation measure called the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly known as the CPI-W.

To calculate the adjustment, the SSA compares CPI-W data from July through September with data from the same months of the prior year. For 2027, that comparison resulted in a 3.6% increase.

Although the COLA is intended to help benefits keep pace with inflation, it may not cover every increase in household spending. Healthcare and other essential expenses can rise at a different pace, making it important to consider the broader picture when reviewing your budget.

What Other Social Security Updates Take Effect in 2027?

In addition to the benefit increase, the SSA announced other changes that may matter to people who are working, preparing to retire, or already receiving retirement or survivor benefits.

For 2027, the maximum amount of annual income subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300.

The earnings limit for people receiving Social Security retirement or survivor benefits will also change. If you are younger than full retirement age throughout 2027, the annual earnings limit will be $25,560.

If you reach full retirement age during 2027, the limit will be $67,920 for earnings received before the month you attain that age. Once you have reached full retirement age, there is no earnings limit.

How Can Medicare Premiums Affect Your Monthly Increase?

While the COLA increases your Social Security benefit amount, the payment that reaches your bank account may be influenced by Medicare costs. This is an important consideration for anyone evaluating Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement coverage.

For many beneficiaries, Medicare Part B premiums are automatically withheld from their Social Security payments. If Part B premiums rise in 2027, they may reduce part of the benefit increase created by the COLA.

It is helpful to compare your updated Social Security statement with your Medicare expenses so you have a clearer view of your expected monthly income.
